long weekending

Hooray, I've found a piece of clothing I can sew for Andy that he will actually wear!

I ordered a few more prints on Spoonflower's lovely organic cotton knit. It took around five weeks to arrive by which time, opening the package felt like Christmas. Andy didn't choose any of these prints himself but is currently trawling the site visualising all his future options.

I asked the good Spoonflower folks if I could buy some of the unprinted basecloth and they obliged at a very reasonable $10 per yard. Mixed up with the prints as contrast sleeves, neckbands and perhaps t-shirt backs, it will make the prints go further.

Mind you, I realised that long cream-coloured sleeves on Jasper would be seriously impractical. This print was particularly appropriate for him: mucky little germs everywhere. See that fingernail? We joke that when we go out places, he pretty much licks every surface. Not quite, but let's just call him tactile.
We had a holiday Monday and headed up to the Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens for a picnic. Clem wanted to play hide and seek and told us that the 'seeker' should count to 28. When it came time for his turn he gave it a try. Then I heard a little cry of "sorry Mama but I can't count up that far" and I had to come out of hiding and help him.

Yep, thanks for the lovely portrait opportunity.

hmm, don't think those knee patches are quite where they should be anymore
Clem whinged loudly when he lost a special stick, and then when Andy took him back to find it and Jasper broke it, Clem cried some more. And so it goes.

When we came home, I worked on a Spoonflower top with Loch Ness monsters on it for Charlie. All t-shirts are being made with my tried & true Ottobre Best T-shirts pattern, with Andy's using the largest size (170cm) plus a wee bit of added width, guided by one of his existing RTW t-shirts.

Then I went to yoga and came back and drank sparkling red with Andy, which is probably not a traditional post-yoga beverage but worked for me.

More holiday Mondays, please.

  1. I LOVE Andy's shirt. Very groovy. I think the plain contrasting sleeves are a great idea. I can see my husband getting into this. Looks like you had a lovely weekend.

    1. Thank you! Yes I think the prints are so full-on that sometimes they need breaking up with a bit of plain.

  2. Sounds like a wonderful day out!It was such lovely weather on Monday here in sunny Adelaide - we had Ross's 2nd birthday party in our front yard. Beautiful!

    1. Happy birthday Ross :)
I'm such a Spoonflower enabler, sorry. But one of the things I love about shopping that site is that you can make a collection of your 'favourites' then go through them to narrow your choice down. Otherwise it's just overwhelming. It's not real cheap but I figure my boys wear these t-shirts until they pretty much disintegrate so it's 'value' :-)

  3. Oh, Andy's shirt is just wonderful!! I am filled with happiness just LOOKING at that fabric! I mean, just look at all of those adorable pronghorn bottoms!! If my husband sees this, he may start demanding I sew more for him too ...

Speaking of which, I clearly need this Ottobre pattern.

Good idea getting some unprinted base fabric from Spoonflower! All of these tees look just gorgeous and perfect. Of course, you have such gorgeous and perfect boys to put them on, that could be part of it. <3

    2. One of your spoonflower knits faded a lot didnt it? Have any of the others or was it an anomoly?
    3. Awesome clothes all round.
    4. Holidays? Botanic gardens? Lucky you!!

    1. Thanks about the hair - I'm jealous of it too! I do think Charlie's needs a bit of a trim but he won't let me right now.
All the Spoonflower t-shirts I've made have faded quite a lot. It's a tiny bit disappointing I guess but somehow they don't look 'old' faded, just more soft and subtle and 'organic', ha. They have all been washed (and soaked) and line-dried in the sun more times than I can count, too. The green dress I made for myself has maybe been washed about five times so far and isn't looking faded at all. Not sure if that answer is helpful or just more confusing :/

    2. I have found that my Spoonflower organic knit fabric has faded more than I had expected but you are right when you say it doesn't look too bad. It is a little bit disappointing, but it certainly hasn't stopped me from buying more. Actually I just finished making a t-shirt for my son using Spoonflower fabric and the Figgy's Tee For Two pattern that you recommended long ago when I made the dress version for my daughter. I will try post about it today so you can see it.

Good job on your t-shirts. The base fabric idea looks great.

  7. Where did you get the apple shorts from? Did you make them? They look cool and the colours match the germs nation fabric well.

I think your t-shirts look like you bought them at a shop, only they are one of a kind. I would have loved that as a kid (I think), but I was wondering if your boys are always happy when you make them clothes or are they starting to get to an age where they are embarrassed to say "My mum made it", when people ask where they got it from?

    1. Yeah, I did make the apple shorts but never got around to blogging them. I think it is a Kokka fabric. I thought it might be a bit 'loud' (I bought it on sale without a specific purpose in mind some time ago) but anyway Jasper seems to like them!
Good question about the boys wanting handmade or not. I am kind of waiting for the day it becomes uncool for them but for now it seems okay! I am starting to make plainer things for the big boys, like denim shorts. I'm hoping at least that they'll keep on enjoying t-shirts, especially if they can help choose the fabrics.
