a little creepy but seasonally appropriate

Is there something a little more Halloween than Valentine about this bunny?
Today Clem said "I want to make something with you". After Jasper offered a couple of his 'making' books for inspiration, he decided on a pink bunny. Never mind that the instructions were for creating a little paint-and-ink picture out of fingerprints. He wanted a soft toy. Honestly it could be a full-time job facilitating all the making that goes on here these days. Not that I'm complaining.

We took a walk to the fabric-shop-around-the-corner because guess what, with three boys I don't have much pink in my stash. Clem tried to talk me into some expensive-looking hot pink silk embroidered with flowers. While I was looking for alternatives, he found the red heart buttons and decided they would be a heart, and the eyes. We agreed upon some pink linen and escaped before he could find any more garish embellishments. Bless his little red plastic heart.

He told me the size he wanted, gave his approval of the design, did some cutting of paper pattern pieces and stuffed the limbs and ears. I simply could not (gently) talk him out of the heart eyes on their button shank stalks so there it is.

He called this funny, wonky thing Isla, after a sweet little friend from Kindy. He's a bit fixated on her so I guess it's all fairly appropriate around Valentine's Day. Not that we really celebrate it or Clem would have any idea about it but, anyway. Maybe it's just in the air.

And then he hung it on a string of bells. Hmm.

There has been more making by the big boys from their Microcrafts book.

dog reads bedtime story to cat from micro-book
Charlie made his tiny cat a bed from a matchbox and actually knitted it a miniature blanket without any help except some instructions in a book. Then he followed some very intricate instructions to make a micro-book, traditionally bound with thread, end papers and hard cover, and very little help. He's really becoming confident of his own abilities and it's marvellous to watch.

Jasper made the little dog (Clem called it a 'little cow') and wants to make it a bowl and bone that are in the book, too. One of the best things about these Microcrafts is they use tiny scraps that we already have. They make my fingers feel all big and fumbly though!

Happy weekend.

  1. That bunny is hilarious! Particularly when hanging by the bell noose. Meg and I made a bunny last weekend together. We have a very similar journey to yours...minus the freaky eyes and public hanging. I've been meaning to take a photo and post about it all week but just haven't go there...maybe tomorrow.

  2. Haha, yes the doll is a tiny bit creepy looking but how sweet is it that Clem wanted make something in the first place??! Lovely! :-)

  3. I'm still laughing at the bunny strung up in the bells! But then I get distracted by the beautiful micro book--so exquisite!

  4. Adorable. I wish my boys were more into making things. That Micro craft book looks interesting. My No. 2 son would probably be into that. Cx

  5. I'm impressed, especially about the self taught knitting. I can't wait to teach my boys to sew and knit.

    1. The knitting blew me away. I showed him how about a year ago and he knitted a long scarf. Then he picked up a book and worked it out again by himself just now. I hope your boys find the joy in making too!

  6. Wow! Your kids are really enthusiastic makers. You've inspired me to involve them more in my crafting.

  7. I was just looking at your bunny again...still funny! I was thinking those eyes could be very sweet cheeks, add a few eyes and you're done...but then it wouldn't be so funny.

    1. Yes, I did think the same about the heart eyes as cheeks... maybe if they were soft and flat rather than hard and on stalks! There was really no winning the argument and he seems to love it, although it can't be too cuddly.

  9. Isla is a very special bunny!

Love the micro crafts - I bought that book for Rosie a couple of week ago - she's only made the tiny owls so far though.

  10. It looks like Isla's middle name could perhaps be Chuckie?!? How old are your bigger boys Jane? My son would probably love that book. He's 7 1/2 and quite a good sewer and crafter, but I'm not sure he quite has the skills yet to be able to make those adorable tiny things.

    1. Chuckie indeed! My big boys are 10 and 9 (turning 11 and 10 mid this year). Jasper (9) needs more help and is also a lot more slapdash about things and needs encouragement to do things more neatly for a better finish (e.g. tracing and cutting pattern pieces neatly so you start the process right). Charlie naturally has more patience and precision, although that's also his age advantage. There are some simpler ideas in the book - like Charlie planted a tiny succulent cutting in a tiny pot - and the idea of miniature seems to really capture the imagination. Even if it might be stretching your boy a bit now, he could grow into it :)

  11. Thanks Jane, I think the book might make a good birthday present for him in June, especially if there are a couple of simpler projects. Like you say, I think the tiny scale of the things will inspire him and I LOVE watching my kids create stuff. I just never know where to put it all, when it's done.

    1. Yeah - that's another good thing about this book - the stuff is TINY! The things can just live on a corner of their desks :)

  13. Oh my god! That picture of the bunny in the noose totally cracked me up! Yes, perhaps it is a little bit more Halloween than Valentine's Day but it's awesome all the same!
